The City of Hamilton's Planning and Economic Development Department is proud to present another thought-provoking PEDTalk titled: Building the Culture of Cycling in a Mid-Sized City

We are excited to welcome internationally renowned speaker Chris Bruntlett, co-founder of Modacity, a creative agency using words, photography, and film to inspire happier, healthier, simpler forms of mobility, to Hamilton. Together with his partner Melissa, they work with a variety of organizations—including municipal governments, transportation agencies, nonprofits, and corporate clients—to address the evolving needs of cities large and small, and enable a variety of mobility options as a way to create successful and more livable regions. Chris will discuss cycling in a mid-sized city, the culture shift around cycling, and talk about his upcoming new book, co-authored with Melissa titled "Building the Cycling City: The Dutch Blueprint for Urban Vitality".

How Hamilton can continue to build an ‘unstoppable’ culture of cycling

We’re going to delve into the much talked about world of city building and the transformative culture of cycling. Bruntlett, is an author and co-founder of Modacity, who will take us on a journey through five Dutch cities and how they built a culture of cycling and urban vitality.

The Dutch Model of Urban Vitality

As the world’s foremost cycling nation, the Netherlands is the only country, in the world, where the number of bikes exceeds the number of people. This is primarily because the Dutch have built a cycling culture accessible to everyone, regardless of age, ability or economic means. There, City officials are rediscovering it as wide-ranging solution to the acute, 21st-century problems that include lack of affordability, obesity, congestion, climate change, inequity and social isolation.

We’ve got your seat ready. Come join us to hear more!
