Join Mackenzie Ogilvie, Head builder at Urbane Wheels while we discuss the nuances and subtleties of the modern bicycle wheel.
The wire spoked bicycle wheel hasn’t changed much since it was first thought of in the early 19th century. A metal, wood, or carbon fibre hoop, held under tension by steel wire attached to a central rolling hub. With all the changes in materials, design, and technology we keep coming back to this seemingly simple (yet incredibly complex) structure. The wheel is the most integral part of the bicycle and the component which takes the most abuse (next to the tire), somehow keeping the rider upright under enormous forces and strains. Ever wonder how it does all that (and more)? Come and talk wheels with Mackenzie Ogilvie, Head builder at Urbane Wheels, one of Canada’s most reputable custom wheel houses.
